This painting is about the space horses occupy in our lives — their visceral presence, the marks they leave on our hearts, and the place they come to inhabit in our souls.
I painted The Space Between Us before travelling to Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary in California, inspired by a photograph of a group of horses. A year later, I found myself standing among those very same horses in the 1,000 acre landscape. One of them went on to form a particularly special connection with me, creating a link between this painting and an experience I could never have anticipated when I first put brush to canvas.
What began as an image became something far more personal: a reminder that our connections with horses can reach into us in ways we may not fully understand, and that sometimes the distance between us is not really a distance at all.
